Kirkland Choral Society was born in the living room of one of our founding members,
Jeffrey Waters. The concept of an Eastside Community choir was
presented to Waters by Dr. Jerry Mader, our first director.
Practicing in a basement rehearsal space with a handful of
singers, Waters says: "we were eight voices strong and sang with
great enthusiasm if not great artistry." Waters, then President
of the Creative Arts League (now the Kirkland Arts Center,) and
Mader both composed and arranged original scores for the group,
including a choral version of Pachebel's Canon. Between
1988 and 1997 the group grew in number and the rehearsal spaces
improved as KCS performed a very diverse repertoire.
In 1997 KCS began its relationship with Dr. Glenn R. Gregg,
our current conductor, under whose direction we found a more
classical focus - performing Schubert's Mass in G,
Beethoven's Hallelujah and Haydn's The Heavens are
Telling.
1998 found us under the direction of Dr. Tony Catanzariti
performing an assortment of pieces from the sacred and secular
to Broadway show tunes.
Following a year under director Tony Catanzariti, KCS was fortunate to re-engage Dr. Gregg in 1999 for what we hope will be a
lifelong partnership. KCS has increased our membership to
more than 90 singers and regularly perform the great choral masterpieces of this and past centuries with full orchestra. We hope that you will join us in celebrating our
20th season by attending our concerts.
